RE: BSc, MSci, MA - what do they all stand for

BSc = Baccalaureate in Science
MSci = Master in Science
MA = Master in Arts

There's a little technicality over the middle word...wehter MA is "Master of the Arts" or "Master in Arts"...tbh it's whatever you want it to be. Some people divide MSci = Master in science and MSc = Master Of Science. There is no real difference.

The important point to bare in mind is that an MA/MSci/MEng (Masters in Engineering) or whatever, masters are better than Baccalaureate!

Oxbridge give a BA to everyone, regardless of their subject, whereas others like to call theirs BSc and BA to make the difference clear between the two academic areas. It really doesn't matter in the end.

BSc - Bachelor of Science (3 year undergraduate course)
MSci - Master in Science (4 year undergraduate course - often called MMath, MEng, MPhys, MChem, MGeol etc - MSci is only really used by the University of London)
MSc - Master of Science (1 year post graduate course)
MA - Master of Arts (1/2 year post graduate course - or if you're an oxbridge graduate it's an honorary title you can recieve for surviving a BA (Bachelor of Arts) and living as a graduate for a certain length of time).

Undergraduate course lengths are different in scotland (were most students do a 4 year UG course and so undergraduate masters tend to be 5 years long (with the option for student with good A levels/higher to skip straight into the second year))

Question  RE: BSc, MSci, MA - what do they all stand for

So what about PhD? Do you need a MSc to do a PhD or is a BSc enough? Also, is a PhD a doctorate?
