RE: Useful student resources

http://www.tvlicensing.biz/

If your thinking of taking a TV to university you might want to have a look at this site before you pay (or try to avoid paying) the licence fee. Though the aim of the site is to abolish the TV licence there is plenty of useful information about it. The site covers the laws regarding the TV licence in much greater depth than the official TV-Licensing site (http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk).

The most important thing for students to note are the fact you don’t need to pay the licence if you don’t use your TV for watching TV broadcasts (i.e. you use it with a games console instead) and that you don’t need to pay your licence for a whole year, just the part while you’re away at uni.

On the other hand the site also has a few ideas for what to do if you don’t have a licence and get an unexpected visit from the TV people, and how their detector vans actually work. All in all tvlicensing.biz is a pretty useful site if you don’t mind the anti-BBC propaganda.

A site where you can meet ppls who currently go to your uni or are planning on going there, great for finding out information about the area, uni or course that you're interested in.

http://www.planning.ed.ac.uk/Pub/Tables.htm

Browsing around some of the student forums and discussion boards you might be forgiven into thinking league tables are the only important thing when it comes to choosing a university. Whether you think this way or not, this page on newspaper links and commentaries from the Edinburgh University should still be useful to you. The site provides a list of the major newspapers’ league tables over the last few years along with their associated commentaries.

Be sure to read the commentaries first so you know exactly what the tables show, and more importantly – exactly what they don’t show.

http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/

Here’s one site that’s not just good for students – it’s pretty useful to everyone. Run by the Citizens Advice Bureau this site has useful information on your right to things like housing, healthcare, education and about the legal system. Sections which may be of particular use to students include the police powers section covering things like the Police’s powers to search or arrest you and the consumer affairs section which tells you what to do if you have problems with goods and services you’re provided.

The information on the site appears to be continuously updated with new sections arriving regularly. Forma wide range of problems this site is a good first point of call.

http://www.missyourmum.com/

Despite the odd name, Miss Your Mum is a really good student site. Tackling mainly student health and welfare, the site has pages and pages of guides for students, and you can be sure of finding some good information here, unlike many of the other student sites.

The site is hampered slightly by its design, though it’s generally easy to navigate and find your way around. The main problem the site suffers from is lack of updates, the last being back in 2002, so some of the information may be less than current.

http://learningat.ke7.org.uk/essentialst...ements.htm

Here’s a site for those thinking about doing their personal statements. Though Studential should obviously be your first point of call Smile There are plenty of other personal statement resources out there. The ke7 personal statement site is pretty badly designed, but there’s loads of useful information hidden there.

The site is split into six obvious sections, each of which contains a page worth of info on topics such as writing and improving your personal statement. Most useful is the advice from admissions tutors and the page of example personal statements.

There are not really that many pages on this site, but the usefulness of what is there makes it well worth a visit.

http://www.freshdirection.co.uk/

Fresh direction is another typical student portal with the usual competitions, stories and slick design though there is some useful information in there somewhere. The site is split into sections such as body and mind, cash and careers and home time, each with subsections containing a few useful articles each.

The front page of the site doesn’t seem to have seen much action recently - the most recent update was back in April. The forum is in a similar situation with very few posts and zero useful ones, though there is some useful stuff buried on the rest of the site if you dig around a bit.

http://www.freewebs.com/graduatemedicine/

This site has been specially designed to help you through the mine field of applying to read medicine as a mature or graduate student. It aims to cover entry requirements for all course types, the different types of course available and the financial mine-filed that is prolonged studying and/or giving up a well paid job.

http://www.s-cool.co.uk/articles_index.asp

The revision site S-Cool has been around for a while, but until recently it used to be mainly subject based. Recently they have added a new magazine style section which has lots of useful info for those applying to university.

Of particular interest are The S-cool guide to applying for University, S-cool! Interview Skills and many other articles relating to university application and student life.

The immature style and unnecessary clip art get annoying after a while but if you’re willing to put these aside there is a lot of genuinely useful information for students there.

RE: Useful student resources

http://www.upmystreet.com

Although scrolling past all of the adverts is a pain it gives information on the demographics of an area, crime rates and type, unemployment levels, average salaries, deaths of pedestrians from traffic plus all sorts of extra detail if you're interested. All compared to either the national average or another place/postcode (so you can compare crime rates to your home town if you're considering a move from a small town/village to a city, or compare one university with another, or even one campus/hall of residence with another)

Admin edit: to fit with front page display
