Student bank accounts

Martin Lewis at Moneysavingexpert has released his guide to Student accounts for 2005/06, with information on how to choose an account, which one he considers the best and how much you can save.

According to him the best account is Natwest’s Student account which offers an average £1420 overdraft over three years, an authorized credit limit of 0% and a five year railcard.

There’s not a huge comparison of all student accounts available, nor discussion of the freebies – it’s all about saving money. If you think you’re unlikely to be using your overdraft (bear in mind you can still stick it in a high interest account) you might want to look at other criteria as well. You can view details of all student accounts in this table on Moneysavingexpert.

Lies!!!!

\" The winner

This year there's no real contest. Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS) has come out with a brand new package to blitz the opposition. Its overdraft averages £1,920 over the three years, around £500 more than the next best. Like all student accounts, you're not guaranteed to get an overdraft this big. It does depend on a credit score, but most students will get it.

HBOS is also the winner for those on four year courses, this time averaging £1,960. \"
