Difference between ethernet address and IP address?
Hey

Can anyone please tell me what is ethernet address and its role in security. If someone knows my PC ethernet address, how would it affect my security? What can he do with that ethernet address?
I have some knowledge about IP address, many ways of tracing and hiding IP, but I don't know if ethernet address can also be traced. I really wanna know ethernet address is useful for what purpose? Thanks for any help.

RE: Difference between ethernet address and IP address?
Ethernet address is an address assigned to network interface cards by the manufacturer and they identify a computer or a machine.IP address is an address assigned to a machine connected to a network. The assignment of addresses can be static or dynamic. This is analogous to phone numbers assigned to each phone in a region.

RE: Difference between ethernet address and IP address?
Ethernet address, also called a MAC address is a 48-bit number used to identify each network computer. This address is usually written in hexadecimal. It is possible that you are thinking of a MAC vs. IP address. The IP address is an identifier for a computer or device on a TCP / IP. Networks using the TCP / IP through the messages based on the destination IP address. Form of an IP address is a 32-bit numeric address written in four digits separated by hyphens.

RE: Difference between ethernet address and IP address?
They are two different things. Ethernet address, MAC address is commonly known as the identity of individual machines in the line and the method often used to allow or deny access to the network or Internet connection. That said, the MAC address filtering is not secure and anyone with a modicum of knowledge to ignore that just a few minutes. Therefore, WEP key has been introduced, which also revealed to be an easy target.
